The artists at Stockwell Studios have been custodians of the former Annie McCall maternity hospital for over two decades.

Lambeth Council are in the process of selling the former Annie McCall Hospital to Henley Homes subject to planning permission. We are not sure what the future lies for Stockwell Studios?

Stockwell Studios is now a listed Grade II building !

We are delighted to inform you that having considered our recommendation the Minister with responsibility in this matter, the Minister for Tourism and Heritage, has decided to add Former Annie McCall Hospital to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. The building is now listed at Grade II. Gosia McCabe (Designation Co-ordinator - South, English Heritage). 12th October 2011

The Annie McCall Hospital is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

• Hospital played a vital part in the network of pioneering women doctors in the late C19, and the growing acceptance of women in the medical profession well into the C20

• Architectural interest: the purpose-built wing, designed by Hart and Waterhouse and dating to 1915, has a smart red-brick facade with stone dressings and a handsome doorcase. There is also an extension of 1938 by Gertrude Leverkus, an early female architect

• State of preservation: there has been little alteration to the building since it opened and it retains its wood floors, terrazzo-paved corridors, original window joinery and one fireplace, which enhance our understanding of how the building functioned.

Thank you Judith Martin for helping the studios!

At last the building has the protection it deserves and this will hopefully herald a new chapter in which  to continue to develop the arts centre and the beautiful garden, that has been open to the public for some time, for the community as well as support local artists and crafts people. It is high time all our energy was able to be fully focused on creating something positive and doing what we are best at instead of fighting for the survival of the building.

Good news. The local community will be thrilled - the building is much loved. During Art4Space education outreach work over the last 10 years, the nostalgic historical stories about the old hospital unfold regularly. Last month a visitor to one of our workshops told me she remembers cleaning the silver in the basement for the canteen and spoke about how strict Annie McCall was!

This is great news for the community and Stockwell members and artists!! Hopefully this is a step towards developing the studios and building into a rich and vibrant arts center for the area and community!
